But, rather, when the weather gets tough, the pandas get going. And it's not that their bodies can take the cold - they actually have relatively little body fat with which to insulate themselves from low temperatures. Giant pandas sleep for about eight to 12 hours a day. Giant Pandas typically have a range of 4-7 km but can travel up to 10 km a day looking for food, water, and shelter. In the winter they will seek shelter in hollow trees. Giant pandas do not hibernate because they live in the sub-tropical zone and, during the winter, come down from the mountains (their preferred habitat. As most of us learned early in school, bears, as well as several other animal species, undergo this long-term, sleep-like phase to escape from the bitter cold during winter months. Although giant pandas are bears, they dont hibernate like many other bear species do. Giant Pandas do not have a permanent den and do not hibernate.
